The Devil Comes
by Herbert Mason

The Devil comes to those who grieve:
Once at the moment of first loss,
Again when yearning hearts seek God.

He comes in endless bitterness
To celebrate new solitudes:
To protest, reminisce, then weep;

And if that fails to separate
Each soul from God, he praises saints
As spectral beings who don't grieve.
